Too much informationemployment dates

Let’s talk changes. Legally speaking, employment law changes. Like us, you have probably been swamped with information about the changes expected in 2013. The amount of information available is incredible, but it is not always helpful. With the government in the process of consulting on changes, deciding on changes and trying to get the legislation through to implement changes it can be very hard to know what is actually happening, when it is happening and how you need to react.

We know we cannot cover all the potential employment law changes in a helpful and concise way in an ezine. Instead of attempting the impossible, we decided to highlight a couple of changes that have received less coverage and tell you about some free resources that offer practical help.

The first change we wanted to highlight is the requirement for real time reporting of PAYE from 6th April. Some businesses have been given an exemption by HMRC and there are limited concessions and exemptions, but it is worth thinking about the logistics of how you are going to meet your reporting requirements now. There is advice on how to prepare here.

The second change is not definite yet, but could make a big difference to some workplaces. With austerity measures hitting the military there are proposals to expand the role of the Reserve Forces. The Ministry of Defence has just finished consulting on the proposals, which include suggestions of financial incentives for employers who have reservists on staff and matching the training reservists receive with civilian qualifications, aiming to reduce employer’s training costs. The overall aim is to encourage employers to support reservists who will occasionally be absent from the business to fulfill their military duties. You can find out more here. 

And lastly, some helpful resources. Health, work and well being is a Government initiative that aims to improve the health of working aged people. The health for work advice line is part of this initiative. It provides practical advice to managers of small and medium sized businesses dealing with employee ill health – find out more. This little used resource could be very useful helping to get employees back to work and it’s free!

ACAS (the Arbitration, Conciliation and Advisory service), and the EHRC (the Equality and Human Rights Commission) have released some helpful guides. The first addresses the issue of pregnancy or maternity leave and redundancy and can be found here.

The second is a guide for employers to help them avoid discrimination on the grounds of religion, belief or lack of belief. It has several practical examples and can be found here.
